| The Foundations of the Liberal
Party. The formation of the
Liberal Party is generally held to date from June 1859, when Whigs, Peelites and Radicals
joined together to form the new Party.
Holding power throughout much of the succeeding 60
years - most notably under Prime Ministers Gladstone and Asquith - the Party was
nevertheless by the end of the First World War divided and demoralised, and found itself
displaced by Labour as the main opposition to the Conservatives.
