Homophobic reaction from Tebbit (2nd November 1998)
Intervening in the row over the "outing" on BBC television of Peter Mandelson, Lord Tebbit voices his concern that gays could be in a position in Government "to do each other favours". Tebbit also suggested that

"Gays should be barred from sensitive Cabinet positions, such as Home Secretary".

In a letter to The Daily Telegraph today Lord Tebbit says that he respects the Trade and Industry Secretary's desire to keep his sexuality private and not flaunt it. He writes: "However, in a world where Freemasons are being asked to identify themselves as such in order that the public may judge if they are improperly doing one another favours, surely it is important that homosexuals in a position to do each other favours should similarly be outed?"
