Women

Conservative & Labour

Liberal Democrats

A great number of Conservative's still believe that a woman's place is in the home, especially when it comes to raising a family. Despite having a female Prime Minister for over a decade the Conservative's ignored the chance to achieve 'true equality for all'.

Labour all-women quotas for parliamentary candidates are undemocratic. Labour is hypocritical in claiming to be modern and forward thinking whilst supporting a policy that gives jobs to people on the basis of gender.

  • Maternity pay in the UK is lower than in other EU countries.

Liberal Democrats are committed to equal opportunities for all. We would:

  • Strengthen anti-discrimination legislation.
  • Reform the tax and benefit system to make it easier for those with caring responsibilities to continue in part-time work.
  • Introduce proportional representation, to help increase the number of women in parliament.
  • Work towards equal representation of women on all appointed bodies within a decade.
  • Simplify legal procedures for bringing 'equal value' cases to court.
  • Introduce equality in pension rights.
  • Promote the adoption of flexible patterns of employment and guarantee the rights of women at work.
  • Promote adequate refuges for women.
  • Invest in a comprehensive network of well women clinics, providing screening, diagnosis and treatment of cervical and breast cancer.
