Democrats would reduce opportunities for crime and tackle the fear of crime. We would:
- Make local authorities responsible
for crime prevention, funded partly from confiscated drug money.
- Set up a Royal Commission to
investigate all possible options to tackle drug abuse.

Facts & Figures.
- The Heroin trade in the UK is worth over one billion
pounds a year.
- There are 200,000 heroin addicts in Britain.
- Offenders with heroin habits require an illegal
income of between 10-20k a year.
- Drug related property crime costs 2.5 billion a
year.
- Locking up drug addicts in prisons does not achieve
anything except increasing the addiction. A reformed addict is more of an asset to
society, than someone who has spent a year in jail and is still an addict on release from
jail.

Liberal Democrats want to legalise cannabis?.
A.
It is not our policy to legalise cannabis. The Liberal
Democrats recognise the practical problems of drug abuse. We would set up a Royal
Commission to consider all the possible options for tackling drug abuse.
