People with Disabilities

Conservative & Labour

Liberal Democrats

The Conservatives while in government avoided implementing the 1986 Disabled Persons Act ( to give disabled people an automatic right to needs assessment) and opposed outlawing discrimination on the grounds of disability

Labour is long on promises, but short on guarantees, with no commitment to increasing benefits.

The biggest obstacles to full participation faced by disabled people are those created by the attitudes of a predominantly able-bodied society. We therefore advocate:
  • A Charter for people with disabilities.
  • Legislation to outlaw discrimination on grounds of disability
  • That people with disabilities who wish to continue in education and training after the age of 19 should receive income maintenance.
  • An increase in Invalidity Benefit and the gradual extension of the Disability Living allowance to include those over 65 years of age.
  • A comprehensive disability income scheme to reimburse individuals for the full cost of their disability.
  • Improved access to transport, buildings and leisure services.
  • Proper recourses for community care services.
