Crime &

| Conservative

Liberal
Democrats |
| Both
Conservative and Labour governments have failed to reduce crime - it has risen from 2.2
million cases in 1976 to 5.5 million cases in 1994. Clear up rates have collapsed, and now only
3% of crimes result in a conviction or a caution, despite 64 pieces of criminal justice
legislation since 1979. |
Liberal
Democrats would reduce opportunities for crime and tackle the fear of crime. We would:
- Strengthen crime prevention and help
people to aid the police. Crime can only be tackled when the police and local communities
work together.
- Make local authorities responsible
for crime prevention, funded partly from confiscated drug money.
- Make the police more effective -
opening up community police stations and putting more police officers back on the beat.
- Set-up Racial Attack Squads to
combat racially motivated crime.
- Work closely with the European Union
to tackle international crime, including drug trafficking and terrorism.
|

Facts & Figures.
- Since 1979 crime has increased by well over 100%,
Burglary by over 150%.
- 1 in 5 crimes go unreported due to intimidation.
- Less than 0.25% of the Criminal
Justice budget is spent on preventing crime.
Questions & Answers.
Q.
Are the Liberal Democrats are soft on crime?.
A.
Unlike the government, the Liberal Democrats are tough and practical. We
want policies which catch criminals, not just headlines. We would like to see a police
service with the resources that's needed to adequately fight crime.
