| The
Conservatives response to the end of the Cold War was disappointing. They failed to
encourage the development of both the European Union and the United Nations capabilities,
and continued to cut our overseas aid budget. Labour lacks the gravitas to play a serious role on the
world stage. Since coming into power Robin Cook, Claire Short and Peter Mandleson have all
managed to cause Britain great embarrassment on a number of foreign issues and also during
trip's abroad. |
Liberal
Democrats aim to help build security throughout the world We believe that the united
Nations (UN) must be able to challenge the sovereignty of states that persistently ignore
human rights, wage war or gravely damage the environment. We advocate:
- Reform of the United Nations.
- The creation of an international
Court of Human Rights to interpret and enforce the ICCPR and human rights conventions.
- The establishment of a permanent UN
peacekeeping force with assured finance.
- The development of an 'Earth
Charter', an environmental 'Geneva Convention' to outlaw deliberate environmental
destruction.
- Improved funding for the UNCHR to
cope with the surge in refugee numbers.
- Reform the international economic
institutions, including the establishment of a new World Trade Organisation and a single
co-ordinating body for debt rescheduling and write-off.
