Liberal Democrats

State power, secrecy, censorship and infringement of civil liberties, the Conservatives managed in eighteen years of government to erode people's rights more than any other post war government. They:
  • Refused to incorporate the European Convention into UK law,
  • Cut legal aid.
  • Sought to censor the media.
  • Presided over numerous miscarriages of justice.
  • The 1994 Criminal Justice Act attacks fundamental human rights in the name of "justice".

In fact under the Conservatives, Britain had the worst human rights record in Western Europe.

Labour have stalled on their half-hearted promise to introduce a UK Bill of Rights. Previous Labour governments have done very little to curb state power.

Liberal Democrats would reduce opportunities for crime and tackle the fear of crime. We would:
  • Bring the European Convention on Human Rights into British law - so people do not have to go to Strasbourg for justice.
  • An independent UK Commission to enforce the Convention on Human Rights.
  • Strengthen laws against discrimination on the grounds of race, age, gender, sexual orientation or religion. This will be achieved by replacing the Sex Discrimination Act and Equal Pay Acts with a single, more effective Equal Treatment Act.
  • Create a new Ministry of Justice to make miscarriages of justice less common, to protect human rights and with responsibilities which would include ensuring that the impact of proposed legislation on equal opportunities is fully considered.
  • Make Legal Aid more available, so no-one is priced out of justice.
  • Create a Supreme Court to replace the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords.
  • Introduce a Freedom of Information Act, placing the responsibility on government and other authorities to justify secrecy.

Questions & Answers.

Q.
You are in favour of gay sex at the age of 16?.
A.
We are in favour of a common age of consent for both gay and straight people. This is an issue of equality, not morality - if young people are labelled as criminals because of their sexual orientation, they will never seek advise about HIV and other sexual diseases.

Q.
What benefit would a Freedom of Information Act give us?.
A.
Freedom of Information Act would give access to all pollution reports, data about the safety of all pesticides, commercial secrets, information on large numbers of advisory and expert committees that meet in secret.
