Mohammed Sarwar, MP for Govan MP banned after 'bribe' allegations (28th June 1997).Mr Sarwar was banned from holding office within the Labour Party after allegations that he paid a rival election candidate £5,000 not to fight a hard campaign. MP denies poll fraud charge (17th December 1997). Mohammed Sarwar appearing in court on charges of election fraud. The 45-year-old businessman, who was the subject of a six-month police inquiry, appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court the day after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He had earlier reported to a police station to be formally arrested and was driven in a police vehicle to the court. Mr Sarwar did not speak during the 30-minute hearing, made no plea and was released on bail. The Crown Office said on Tuesday that he was to be charged over the late registration of voters, attempting to pervert the course of justice, and irregularities involving his election expenses. |
